"I will never race road. No way." - me

Well, I guess I should know by now to never say never.

So, um, I raced my first road race this year and liked it. A lot. Really. Problem was, all I had was my cross bike: Knife to a Gunfight right? So what was a poor bike mechanic to do? Once again, my family at Unreal Cycles saved the day and sent me this beauty! Yes, it is fast. Yes, you can ride it, but it will only make you want one.

So my first day on the dream machine was spent dodging squirrels and strollers on the American River Bike Trail - we need to build more of these!!! It is flat, fast and smooth, and if you get out at the right time of day, you can fly!

The bike felt amazing - not twitchy, not sluggish - like Baby Bear's bed, it was "just right". Did Goldylocks get eaten? I don't remember... anyway, I had my gun and I was ready to race!

Then I got sick.

Oh well. The Sea Otter course was tough! Hacking up lung nuggets didn't help with the climbs much, but the bike was pure pleasure on those rough roads. The beefy chainstays kept the frame stiff, while the svelte seatstays saved my backside from some serious abuse. The Sea Otter course was the first ride where I got to do some fast descending, once again, the bike was a prime example of optimal use of quality materials and smart geometry. I felt at ease on the descents, I knew the bike would handle all the speed I could generate and not feel "nervous" like some bikes I have ridden in the past. Though my performance was not what I had hoped, the bike was smokin'!!

My next race was the Wente Road Race in Livermore. I was still feelin' the effects of my chest cold, but overall, I felt pretty good. Pre-race dinner was some amazingly spicy Thai food, which left me light and ready to climb at the starting line.

Well, I am not really a climber, but I am working on it. The Wente course had some pretty good climbs and some killer descents - soooo fun!!! Of course, the climbing came first and I got spat off the back pretty quick with a bunch of other n0n-climbers. Luckily, about ten of us levitationaly challenged individuals had some pack experience and caught the skinny little bi... climbers on the flats by cranking out some serious pacelineage on the back side.

I payed my dues at the front a few times and held my own on the climb to the finish. I ended up 21st. Not too bad. Once again, the bike was a pleasure on every part of the course, and pizza and beer were enjoyed by all.

I will never race a Crit. Never.

Next up, my thoughts on Wheels, brakes and seatposts recently added to my sweet ride!

Jacksonville Bike Fest

Over the weekend Unreal Cycles took the opportunity to represent at a local race in Jacksonville, OR.

Echelon Events hosted hordes of riders for a two day event Saturday and Sunday.

Due to technical difficulties and the camera chewing up the memory card we haven't got much in the way of media to present for you other then the shots below:

This was the awards for the Super D on Saturday. These were your top three men in the pro category.

Unreal Cycles, as a title sponsor, had the banner flying high behind the awards presentation.

For the raffle we put up an Unreal Senior shown here with its' proud new owner. Looking forward to getting some pictures back when he gets this built up.

Shown above is our new sidehack. Lots of people interested in where it came from and what it was for...

Our answer...

Pizza Delivery!

Other concepts brought to us over the weekend included new ride for paper boy? Dog carrier? Maybe even a new shopping cart for mum.

The best idea we had from the Sea Otter was "Beer-Run-Hack" or mobile kegger.

Ride of choice for the Frat or Sorority house.

What are your thoughts?

Look out for Unreal Cycles attending more West Coast based events throughout the year.

On One bars go big and colorful !

We got back from the Otter to all the items that should have arrived before we set off, but some of the shipments were more exciting than others.

Latest installment from Deepest Darkest Rotherham was several boxes of bars.

When our warehouse staff were told this they were expecting Cadburys chocolate bars, but instead had to settle for Mary, Mungo and Midge in all the new colors.

A little late in going down the 31.8mm path for clamp size, On One has now taken the leap to the clamp standard for all biking styles, and now has a bar and color to suit your particular cycling mood.

Check them out HERE

Sea Otter Wrap up

Finally, the journey is over and we are back at the shop.

It was a long trip which we split over two driving sessions but we arrived back home this afternoon with a pretty eventless drive under our belts.

Just dumped the memory card from one of the digital cameras and thought I'd share with you these:

Hats off to this wife / husband team who drove their espresso bike each day from Monterey city center! They spent their days providing much needed and much appreciated caffeine jolts in the form of free espresso shots, courtesy of Mountain Bike magazine.

They are also the reason that we managed to get packed up as quickly and efficiently as we did on Sunday due to the coffee they provided us that morning.

Every year we end up giving loads of shwag (technical term) away to the grommets and usually the parents alike. This year was no different and shown here are our favorite grommets of the weekend...

One of which was awarded a medal for his efforts in the kid's race and an On-One beenie for his efforts entertaining us!

Here are our favorite brothers! This hardcore duo were shredding the demo area better than some of the adults we saw rolling through so we had to deck them out in On-One beanies!

Along with the favorite groms of the weekend we got visited for the second year in a row by these characters:

The dogs, and their owners, are avid cyclists who make sure to protect themselves from the sun's harmful rays with sweet custom sunglasses. Besides their need for speed though, these glamorous pooches are also the stars of their own books which their owners write about their adventures. Here one of the dogs can be seen relaxing while his owner checked out the Unreal demo fleet. It's counterpart however was much more into extreme riding and could be found hitting the dirt jumps in the demo area with his owner on our demo Unreal Senior.

I've got a video of this also I'll try and get posted up later.

As you know we are K9 fans here at Unreal Cycles with our very own Sprocket the Dog so we couldn't resist putting this shot on the site!

Sooner than you'd think Sunday evening was upon us, and just like that, another Sea Otter came to a close. We packed up the rig and headed for home.

It was a great time! Thanks to all who came and demo'd a bike. Off to go unpack the trailer.

If you attended the event be sure to send us a comment or a picture and we'll post some on the FaceBook.

Better late...

We've been flat out all week to get here, get set up and get sorted out.

Only now are we finding some down time to get you an update.

Coming to you live from Sea Otter 2010. The story so far...

4/13 - Tuesday

We were supposed to get out of the shop and on our way by mid day to early afternoon, right? We were building demo bikes, dotting I's and crossing T's until much later and finally managed to depart around 10:30PM. The new rig at its' best freshly polished having had all the Country Music Television stickers removed.

We were on the road until about 4am when we arrived in Willows, CA and parked up to get some much needed rest.

4/14 -Wednesday

Sprocket the Dog sighted maneuvering his way through the bay area via google maps.

Up and at them around 7am after climbing into bed at 4am we started to bare down on our destination just before lunch time.

4/15 - Thursday

First day on location! Once we'd got the new Nashville Dash trailer where we wanted it and explained to the organizers that we weren't actually doing anything that our neighbors weren't by sticking out of the front of our allotted space, we went to work putting the booth up and unloading the trailer.

Very excited to find that our precious cargo of aprox. 20 demo bikes had traveled well in our new bike rack system, we proudly put them all out to show the festival goers.

4/16 - Friday

A big increase in the number of people around the venue today and lots of interest in our range of demo bikes situated in the SRAM Demo Ride Zone.

The mean green Unreal Senior demo bike was being raved about by a couple of riders who spent quite some time putting it through its' paces on the pump track.

The Orange Blood demo bike got some great feedback from some riders who took their turn on the pump track with it.

More pictures to come tomorrow including the demo MotoPed as well as some spy shots of the new prototype Orange 225 featured here at Sea Otter.

Until then one more thing...

... It's been emotional.

Zumbi Nation

It's starting to get down to the wire as far as setting off on time Tues/Wedn-day ish.

We were just gathered around the whiteboard taking stock of what's here, what's built, what's painted etc. when Mr. Postman came through with several large boxes bearing the Zumbi name.

So just when we thought we were done with bike builds... I present to you Zumbi Nation.

Back to bike building we go!

Latest from Severed Alliance

Matt Secombe starring in this latest video from Severed Alliance.

Be sure to swing by the booth at Sea Otter to get a look at all the Severed Alliance bikes for yourself. Like the look of one? Throw your leg over it and see if it is as easy as Matt makes it look in the video.

Spy shots.

What can Brown do for You? Say the UPS adverts, well today Brown brought me some goodies from the UK and Orange Mountain Bikes.

Quickly abandoning the email I had been writing I rushed to receiving where I found these two little gems.

Opening the first box to find raw unpainted Orange beauty just ready for the powder coater.

What's that, a link? On an Orange?

There it is. A long awaited proto 225. Taking a closer look this frame, although not single pivot which has been the Orange calling card for long enough, it still has all the Orange lines. It still has that Orange hand finished feel and really looks ready to take on World Cup DH courses!

Ben did a little video on the bike at Tamed Earth discussing how this one feels after riding the 224.

Want to throw your leg over it? Come see us at Sea Otter where you'll find it built and ready to ride.

Another new and exciting item is the Orange Miii. This hardcore hardtail is built in Halifax with its' full suspension siblings and looks the business wouldn't you agree?

Orange boasts: "Monocoque down-tube to the refined quatro box stays, the 6061 Halifax-built MIII is the stiffest, strongest and lightest dirt frame around."

Come see this one built at Sea Otter and take it for a demo ride.

Enough blogging from me, someone has to go get all these demo bikes built! If you need us we'll be in the shop building bikes!

Weekend work update.

Lots more work got done over the weekend.

You've already heard about the bikes we managed to get done.

The new trailer had some attention and now we have an almost finished result.

You've seen the before shots in the earlier posts.

Here's the after shots.

With a little attention from the power wash and the circular buffer we'll be ready to turn out in the Sea Otter Demo Area. See you down there.

Otter Update

Things are not going quite to schedule yet (with 11 days to go)

Of the 21 bikes we are supposed to have available for Demo at Sea Otter, currently their whereabouts are as follows:

4 are complete
5 are in the warehouse but still in kit form
4 are in bound from the UK (un painted)
4 are in bound from Poland
4 are still in Taiwan due to ship on Monday

1 is still being made !!

And that's just the bikes, other frames, wheels, components are still AWOL somewhere in the air or waiting to be packaged up.

It's either going to be a great spectacle to behold or the mother of all @#$% ups.

Stay tuned for more excitement as the deadline looms.
