Genius Diablo

Jason potentially had the first of the new Genius frames in the country built up and between looking after his new baby girl and taking care of business he's managed to get out for a couple of rides:-

I finally completed the upgrade of my skinny tire bike - Luigi and Peter hooked me up with a Genius frame and fork, plus some assorted bling-y bits at the end of July, and in between feedings and diaper changes for my new baby girl, I managed to get it all built up and stylin' just before Labor Day.
Got out for a few short spins in the East Bay hills with SuperSteve and immediately loved the frame - comfortable, responsive, and solid on the descents. I'm sure the frame helped cover/compensate for my lack of saddle time and fitness, though SS dropped me at every opportunity as he continued his pursuit of the Strava KOH for as many East Bay climbs as possible. Winter will have to be spent on the trainer so I’m a bit better a ride companion when spring rolls around.
I seem to be getting in one big ride per month now, SF-Santa Cruz, Levi's Gran Fondo, etc., but most of my rides are quick hitters that I can fit in while the baby girl is taking a nap. Last weekend was typical - baby started to snooze around 1pm Sunday afternoon so I suited up and, after a short tour of Oaktown's finest neighborhoods, I was up on Skyline & Grizzly Peak, enjoying the sunshine, multiple blimps in the air, and some rolling roads. I decided to stay up on the ridge since it was a little chilly and I’m soft enough to want to avoid the cold, shady canyons on the Pinehurst loop. Sooooo soft! The exact opposite of east coast!

Anyway, as I said, pretty typical for me these days - 26 mi, 2600' climbing, 1hr45min, and I got home just as Vida was waking from her nap. Phone shots to try to capture the beauty of the afternoon, but don't quite do it justice.
I’ll bring a better camera next time. Definitely digging the bike - nice details, good graphics, and solid build all around. It will probably make a roadie of me yet!

New T Shirts just in.

We are always asked about T shirts sporting the brands we carry, unfortunately much of the availabilty is out of our hands, and depends on if the companies we support want to supply soft goods with their logos on.

Well it seems that the folks at Soma/IRD have got on board with this big time, and have just released a new line of 10 different Ts with the various logo's from their brand family.

They are all top quality with high cotton content and premium printing. Good range of sizes and colors, even some womens cut.

Check them out today,

As usual at the best prices anywhere.

King of the hill

Well last weekend was another great shred fest. Both days I rode down in Santa Cruz – Saturday with two bros and Sunday I did a long solo ride.

Sunday I totally forgot about daylight savings, which is no big deal since I rather get up early than late. In typical fashion, I got to the trail head a bit too early (around 5:30am). No big deal, I busted out the iPhone and watched MTB movies waiting for the sun to show its nose. After a few minutes, I peek out my driver’s window to see if it was dawn yet and spot something crossing the parking lot. Right next to my car (literally 10 feet away) - a Mother F!@#$ Mountain Lion was crossing the dirt parking lot. It was a big one - like the length my Alpine. There it was, leisurely crossing the lot, then crossed the street to only disappear in the hills on the other side of the road, which also happens to be where we ride.

I literally sat in my car for like 30min pondering if I should go ride or not. But you know me, I still rode – and glad I did since the conditions were fantastic. I know they are out there, but I rather not see nor run into them...To be honest - I wish I had not seen it. Now it’s constantly in the back of my mind. My first and only sighting before this one was at Fremont Older (local park here) like 10 years ago. ugh!!

Monday I headed out for an early morning night ride and spotted this on the side of the trail, talk about freaky!!!

With that said – the Orange Alpine is still going strong. Been trying a plethora of different shocks on it to see what works best (or more what I prefer). Next one will be a Pushed RP23, which I should be getting sometime next week. Good fun!

Happy trails!

Flow 5:2 Review

I was invited by UnrealDeal to do a posting to review the Grammo Flow 5:2 wheel set. I purchased the wheels early this year in April through my friend, Jerome Harrison, worked a fantastic deal with the US distributor and I patiently awaited my race wheels. I had planned on getting a Zipp 606 tubular wheel set and then talked to my coach (Jerome's wife), and then decided to save the extra cash and give the Grammo brand a try. I planned on racing my tt bike at Ironman Kansas 70.3, Spirit of Racine, and Ironman Wisconsin. It was going to be a solid year of training and racing with many long rides (I did 4 training rides plus 100 miles) on the race bike with the Grammo Flow 5.2. As a result, I had superb races and ZERO issues with the
wheels including a lot of riding over rough roads in the midwest.

A very happy customer:

(Brand new wheels, first time on the bike)

(Kansas 70.3)

(Spirit of Racine)

Bike: Kuota Kalibur

On the wish list is a disc!

Chinese Food

A long time friend of the Unreal family and serious triathlete recently returned from China where he took it upon himself to sample Some of the local cuisine, here is his Story:

So, for me the off season has come and I am focusing on getting completely healthy before I start what I think will be the best year of my triathlon career. Next year brings the Quelle Roth Challenge where I fully intend on tucking under the 9 hour mark. It is not going to be easy by any stretch, but I am going to give it everything I’ve got.

I just returned from China last week. Each time I go I jump in with both feet and do my best to absorb as much of the local culture as possible. As food is such a big part of the culture I seem to always end up eating very bizarre things. This time around, the week started out relatively tame with the most peculiar items being pig stomach, esophagus, and the ever popular boney fish (more bones than fish, why bother?). Nothing to really write home about there. It wasn’t until my second to last day, when I was in the small town of Laiwu visiting a very nice casting factory that I was presented with something I felt was truly unusual. Scorpions.

This got me excited. I like giving my taste buds a challenge and this looked like it would do just that. After some instruction on eating technique (basically, don’t eat the sharp stinger at the end of the tail), I dug in. Surprisingly, they actually tasted pretty good. I would describe the taste as overcooked bacon, and the texture almost like a crispy pretzel. I must have eaten around 7 of them before deciding that it was enough. One of the factory employees explained that scorpions are thought to be a form of Chinese medicine and that they promote health and strength. Maybe this was just what I would need to crack 9 hours in Roth!

The rest of the day was pretty standard. The evening however was not. Once we arrived back at our hotel I began to feel hot and achy. The kind of precursor you have just before coming down with the flu. I went to the bar and had a beer hoping that it would take the edge off. It didn’t. I went back to my room to sleep it off. 30 minutes after hitting the pillow I was shaking violently, sweating, and hallucinating. Every medicine has its side effects. I wished scorpions came with a warning label!
